New – Amazon EC2 R7a Instances Powered By 4th Gen AMD EPYC Processors for Memory Optimized Workloads
In July 2022, we introduced the Amazon EC2 R6a instances, finely tuned for memory optimization and powered by the robust 3rd Gen AMD EPYC (Milan) processors, capable of running at clock speeds of up to 3.6 GHz. These instances catered to a diverse set of customers, particularly those running workloads reliant on x86 instructions, such as SAP, who sought ways to maximize their cloud utilization. They embraced the flexibility of EC2's compute offerings.
Today, we are thrilled to announce the general availability of our latest memory optimized Amazon EC2 R7a instances, leveraging the remarkable 4th Gen AMD EPYC (Genoa) processors, boasting impressive clock speeds of up to 3.7 GHz. These instances usher in a new era, delivering a remarkable 50 percent boost in performance compared to their predecessors. This enhanced performance can be harnessed to accelerate data processing, consolidate workloads more efficiently, and ultimately reduce total ownership costs.
AVX-512, Vector Neural Network Instructions (VNNI), and brain floating point (bfloat16). Additionally, these instances are equipped with Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) memory, enabling lightning-fast access to in-memory data, providing an astounding 2.25 times increase in memory bandwidth when compared to the R6a instances, resulting in reduced latency. Notably, R7a instances also offer the peace of mind of always-on memory encryption through AMD secure memory encryption (SME).
Designed to meet the demands of memory-intensive workloads, these instances come SAP-certified and are exceptionally well-suited for high-performance tasks such as managing SQL and NoSQL databases, powering distributed web-scale in-memory caches, handling in-memory databases, conducting real-time big data analytics, and running Electronic Design Automation (EDA) applications.
The R7a instance family boasts configurations with up to 192 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) and a generous 1536 GiB of RAM, making them perfectly suited for tasks that require substantial computational power and memory capacity. Here are the comprehensive specifications:

What sets the R7a instances apart is their support for cutting-edge technologies such as
